What is Reiki:
Reiki ( pronounced Ray- Key) is a Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation, and healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to use Reiki, it will work whether you believe in it or not. Reiki treats the whole person- body, emotions, mind, and spirit- creating many beneficial effects including feelings of relaxation, peace, security, and well-being.

Your First Reiki Session~
Before the Reiki Session:
When making your appointment take into consideration the time of day as well as what else you have planned for the day of your appointment. It is recommended that you do not schedule any activities directly following your session that requires you to be up and running at full speed. Reiki is a very relaxing treatment; and therefore, you may be so relaxed afterwards that you really would not be able to function at your highest level. After Reiki it is best just to take it easy.
For your first session allow yourself about an hour and a half. This will give you enough time to fill out paperwork, have a conversation before and after your session and the Reiki Session itself.
The New Client Intake Form :
Because Reiki is a whole person treatment, the information requested on the “New Client Intake Form” consists of more than the usual Name, Address, City, and Phone contact information. You will also be asked to list any current medical and/or psychological conditions, current prescription medications, as well as herbs, minerals, supplements, “ over the counter” medication, and the history of other types of treatment you have used to address your wellness needs. Signing the “New Client Intake Form” implies that the information you have listed is honest and accurate.
The First Appointment Intake Conversation:
I will review the information you have given on your intake form and then we will have a conversation about your expectations of the Reiki session. Since this is your first experience, I will give you a brief review of what Reiki is and what to expect during the treatment.
Preparations for the Reiki Session:
It is a good idea for you to take a restroom break prior to the beginning of your session. For all sessions you will be fully dressed, removing only your shoes, jewelry and belts. The intent of Reiki is to re-establish the flow of energy, so any constrictions may hamper this process. In all probability, you will be laying on your back on the massage table with a pillow under your knees to reduce stress on your lower back. You may have a pillow or a folded towel under your head. Since deep relaxation often occurs with Reiki, leading to a decline in body temperature, you will be offered a blanket to prevent you from becoming cold. Soft music may be playing in the background to support the deep relaxation process. I will take a few minutes before the session, while sitting in silence at the treatment table to prepare myself for the energy flow during the sessions. I may put my hands lightly on your body or hold my hands about ½ to 2 inches above your body. Both methods achieve the same outcome, but I will discuss with you before your session which you prefer.
During the Reiki Sessions:
During the session it is best to keep conversations to a minimum. Of course you may speak at anytime you wish, but the fullest benefit of the deeply relaxing Reiki session is obtained by being mostly in silence during the session.
I will go over your body with different hand positions above key areas to transmit Reiki energy. I will hold each hand position for 3 to 5 minutes. Then I will pay extra attention to specific areas of the body if needed or to focus on the energy centers of your body (chakras). Either way the energy goes where it is needed, to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.
Allow yourself to relax fully during the session. Often clients fall into a deep and relaxing sleep during the session. I may ask if you are warm enough and if you are comfortable.
Ending the Reiki Session:
I will let you know when the session has finished. You can take a few minutes on the table to come fully back into the present moment. You will be helped to get off the table, and you will be offered a glass of water to drink to help ground you.
At the End of Your Session:
We will have a short discussion about your session while you finish grounding. Since Reiki can result in profound relaxation, you may feel somewhat drowsy following the session. Be sure to mention this! If the drowsiness continues for more than a couple minutes I will either suggest you rest for 10 – 15 minutes before leaving the room, take a gentle stroll or relax in your car for 10 minutes before traveling.
Your Response to Treatment
People’s experiences vary during a Reiki session; however, most people feel the energy as heat. Some describe the feeling as a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around them. Others may feel tingling, vibrating, or waves of energy from the hands of the practitioner. Most people feel a great sense of relaxation, calm and peace during the session, and incredibly energized and clear afterwards. Some see colors and some don't feel anything. Experiences can differ from person to person and also from session to session. As a recipient of Reiki, hopefully you will be able to feel the healing impact of this energy healing method. However if you don’t feel anything either during or in the following days after do not assume that the Reiki was of no value. It is possible that it’s impact is too subtle for you to sense. A wonderful aspect of Reiki is that you do not have to experience it, or to believe in it for it to be beneficial. Universal energy is always working!
Days Following Your Reiki Session:
The effects of your Reiki session could last for several days afterwards. Old memories may come forward as your energy is releasing them. There can also be releases of physical or emotional sensations such as crying, sighing, wanting to scream, or laughter all of these are ok. Very occasionally after a Reiki session you may experience a “healing reaction”. This usually indicates that your body is continuing with the cleansing process. It also indicates that more Reiki may be necessary. Symptoms you may experience are headaches, nausea, cold or flu like symptoms, bowel changes, feeling emotional, and fatigued. This normally resolves within a couple days. During this time you can support your body by drinking lots of water, eat healthy, gently exercise, and talk through your feelings with someone you trust. If you have concerns or questions about anything you are experiencing following Reiki, please feel free to contact me.
